Maarten Smies
Maarten Smies MSc is the principal
consultant and director of Frogs International. He is a highly
and widely experienced environmental (and HSE) management
advisor with twenty years of direct experience in the
exploration and production of oil and gas business and with nine
years of earlier environmental experience.
Until his retirement in 2008 he was EP Global Environment Lead
with Shell International Exploration & Production in the
Netherlands, now part of Shell's Upstream business. He has
carried out substantial in-country projects in Nigeria, Gabon,
Tanzania, Zaire/Congo, the USA, Canada, Colombia, the UAE,
Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Russia and Kazakstan and
completed senior postings to Oman, the UAE and Iran.
In addition, he has had considerable involvement in external
affairs and the environmental/external affairs interface and
engagement in sustainable development and in learning and
development in environmental management.
An all-round environmental and HSE management advisor, Maarten
has extensive intercultural experience and is a good team player
and a motivating leader of staff.
Maarten has been engaged in substantial activities and
responsibilities in his professional field and in the social
field. He was a founder member and secretary of the
Environmental Toxicology Section of the Netherlands
Society of Toxicology and he chaired the Society's
Committee on Information and Education. He has been a board
member for eight years and vice-president of the Dutch
National Trust for Nature Conservation and is a recognised
leader there.
There is also a presentation on intercultural aspects of
environmental management in the international oil and gas
industry.
Associates
Olga Ignatenko MSc PhD has joined us as an
associate expert on waste management and waste recycling and
processing. Olga and I recently worked together on an
Environmental Management System and Certification scheme in
Ukraine.
